Hard-cover Coptic-stitch via private Zoom

from $395.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki

This binding style is available as a private workshop. Nota bene: There is no companion recording. But there is a charming illustrated multi-page handout with step-by-step instructions, which we will mail you a day or so after your workshop session. No previous bookbinding experience is necessary; a bit of glueing experience is a plus.

This delightful style, which dates back to 2nd century Egypt, opens perfectly flat. Sewing your book involves 60 linking stitches, which you will complete during the workshop.

We begin by getting acquainted with paper grain and its importance for the finished book. After my review of the bookbinding tools we will use, you will be ready to fold eight sheets of Hahnemuhle Bugra into your signatures. You will learn to use your awl to pierce the holes in the covers to prepare for sewing. To allow you to focus on the sewing, which is time consuming, I will provide a pair of covers with your workshop materials. You will also receive a set of book-boards and Japanese paper to make a pair of covers during the workshop, for your next book!

Class fee includes all materials we use to make a book: a sheet of luscious Japanese paper, eight sheets of Hahnemuhle Bugra for your signatures, a pair of pre-made covers, a pair of pre-cut binders-board covers, and waxed-linen thread.

Tools needed: Bonefolder, teflon bonefolder (highly recommended, lightweight awl, medium awl, X-acto knife, scissors, ruler, triangle ruler, PVA glue & a glue-brush. You will receive a 20% discount on all tools ordered for the workshop (via refund after your workshop purchase). You can purchase these tools individuallyhere.

Ancillary tools needed: pencil, scrap paper for glueing on, and a cutting mat, a heavy weight (or book) for pressing your box.

Nota bene: If you have the necessary tools but are in need of the glue & glue-brush, you’ll find them in a separate shop listing here.
