Long-stitch-link-stitch via private Zoom

from $395.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki

This binding style is available as a private workshop. Nota bene: There is no companion recording. But there is a charming illustrated multi-page handout with step-by-step instructions, which we will mail you a day or so after your workshop session. No previous bookbinding experience is necessary.

What you’ll make: A beautiful (and practical!) ephemera album, travel journal, or sketchbook with soft covers in your choice of a dozen subtle shades of heavy Saint-Armand 100% cotton printmaking paper. (Before I assemble your materials, we’ll talk colour!)

We begin by getting acquainted with paper grain and its importance for the finished book. After my review of the bookbinding tools we will use, you will be ready to fold your three sheets of Stonehenge drawing paper (with deckled edges) to make your twelve signatures. Next you will measure, fold, and score your cover, and prepare the spine for stitching. To stitch your signatures into your cover, you will use the triple-hyphenated long-stitch-link-stitch binding technique. You will finish up by making a pocket/envelope for the interiors of your front and back covers. We rejoice.

Class fee includes all materials we use to make this book: a sheet of luscious Saint-Armand handmade paper, Stonehenge drawing paper for your pages, and watercolour paper (for reinforcing your covers).

Tools needed: Bonefolder, shipping clerk’s knife, X-acto knife, lightweight awl, medium awl. You will receive a 20% discount on all tools ordered for the workshop (via refund after your workshop purchase). You can purchase these tools individuallyhere.

Ancillary tools needed: scissors, ruler, triangle ruler, pencil, and a cutting mat.

I look forward to sharing my love of papers & bookbinding with you in this three-ish hour workshop.
